TRAIL ACCESSIBILITY PROJECT
In 2024, the Friends of Mueller State Park began a project to identify how accessible some of the trails are for hikers with limited mobility, for those hiking with children, and for individuals who want a more or less challenging hike.
The first step is to measure each trail's 'Elevation Profile'. This is a detailed account of which parts of a trail are steep, by how much, and for how long, and which parts of our trails are flat. To do this, we are using a modified Garmin watch. As we hike with this watch, it takes an elevation 'snapshot' every few seconds, providing us hundreds of data points per trail to calculate its accessibility characteristics, such as uphill gain, and downhill sections.
This project has been greatly enhanced by the aid of 007Software.eu who specially created a variation of one of their Garmin watch applications to help us track the elevation profiles of Mueller State Park trails.
We would like to thank Kees Bond and his crew of software developers! They have a wide variety of Garmin watch apps. Check out what they have to offer at https://007Software.eu .
If you would like to volunteer to help us with this trail assessment process, reach out to us on Facebook or send an email to FriendsOfMuellerSP@gmail.com.
